Educational assessment at Hagaskóli
Hagaskóli aims for ongoing assessment to guide, and encourage, students on their progress. Emphasis is on students demonstrating knowledge and skills in diverse ways. Grades reflect work completed consistently throughout the school year. The assessment should provide students, parents and teachers with good information about learning progress and improvement.
Formative learning
In formative assessment, great emphasis is placed on students always knowing the learning objectives, what is expected of them, what is needed to achieve the objectives, and even participating in evaluating their own work effort. Educational assessment must be diverse, reliable, impartial, honest and fair. It takes place consistently throughout the school year.
Final grade
Lesson plans list components of final assessments. These may include projects, presentations and work methods. Students receive letter grades for assessment components (assignments) that form the basis of their final grade.
Letter grades are not a linear scale but a classification. B means the student has demonstrated competence, C means the student needs practice to demonstrate competence, and D means the student has not demonstrated competence. Students who do not demonstrate competence always receive an official statement from the teacher with their grade. A means the student has shown outstanding competence.
