About Hagaskóli

Hagaskóli opened in part of the current building on October 1, 1958. The school is a direct continuation of Gagnfræðaskólinn við Hringbraut, which operated in rented space at Hringbraut 121. That school opened on October 1, 1949. Hagaskóli was built in stages from 1956 to 1963. Construction resumed in winter 1988-1989. A new wing with 7 classrooms was built along Dunhagi. After mold was detected in part of the school building in 2022, a large portion has been rebuilt, temporary classroom units added, and plans made for new construction in coming years.

Consolidated school for Vesturbær

Hagaskóli's school district encompasses all of Vesturbær, from the airport and Lækjargata to Seltjarnarnes. The double-session schedule ended in 1976 making it possible to work under normal conditions at Hagaskóli. In addition to area residents, the school has consistently attracted a large number of students from outside the district.

Vesturbær grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, with 240-student cohorts going through the school year after year. When Miðbærjarskólinn closed, the school district expanded. The school had double sessions with teaching until evening. Student numbers peaked at over 850. Today, Hagaskóli has over 600 students.
