Fundraising money from Good Cause delivered
Students donate 4.4 million to Ljósið and children in Gaza
Ljósið and children in Palestine today received the proceeds from last week's Gott mál fundraiser, totaling 4.4 million króna.
A tradition has formed in recent years for students to choose one domestic cause and one international cause to support. This year, students chose to support both children's and youth programs at Ljósið as well as children in Gaza. Hjálmtýr Heiðdal, chair of Iceland-Palestine, told students at the handover ceremony that the money would be used to purchase prosthetic limbs for children in Gaza.
The total amount raised is 4,400,000 króna, which will be split equally between these organizations.
Emil Kjartan Valdimarsson and Hanna Ellen Mariusardóttir Midtvik hand over the proceeds to Hjálmtýr Heiðdal from Iceland-Palestine and Valgerður Örn Eiríksdóttir from Ljósið.
In a brief address, Ómar Örn, the principal, mentioned that while the fundraising amount was important for these organizations, the project's purpose is also for students to experience firsthand how important it is to do good in the community and to realize that good deeds can change others' lives for the better. Students were also praised for organizing the event, which ran very smoothly last week.
This was a joyful moment for students this morning, and we hope the money that has now been delivered will benefit youth.
