New Icelandic musical premieres at Hagaskóli

On Monday evening, March 31, a group of students premiered a new Icelandic musical, W(or)st Side Story (I. Gaggó Ve(r)st). The musical was written entirely by students at the school, who created the lyrics, music and choreography. Set at Hagaskóli in both past and present, the story features various events that unfold with humor and joy at the forefront, despite having a serious undertone.

Approximately 140 students contributed to the production, demonstrating remarkable initiative, creativity and dedication throughout the preparation process. Yesterday's premiere was a testament to the talent of Vesturbær teenagers, who worked together seamlessly to create a professional, entertaining and powerful production.

Preparation began during the previous school year when students first developed the initial plot concepts. Since then, the script team has further developed these ideas, refined the characters and crafted the song lyrics. The performance group includes more than 50 students who act, sing and dance.

The music composition team also began their preparatory work last year. Once the songs were completed, the band was assembled and the arrangement process began. A band of more than 30 members performs the music, with considerable effort invested to ensure optimal sound quality during performances.

The production is directed by Arna Sif Ásgeirsdóttir, drama teacher at Hagaskóli, with Kristín Ýr Lyngdal serving as assistant director. Benedikt H. Hermannsson supervised the composition team and musical arrangements, while Gunnar Gunnsteinsson conducts the band. Creative and practical arts teachers provided guidance to students in creating the set design and costumes.

W(or)st Side Story will run daily through April 6. For showtimes and tickets, visit tix.is (https://tix.is/event/19260/gaggo-verst)
