Kormákur Jónas, an eighth-grader, wins the Pangea math competition

The Pangea math competition wrapped up in April. Kormákur Jónas Níelsson, an eighth-grader at Hagaskóli, made it look easy — taking first place in the eighth-grade category. The Pangea math competition is open to all eighth- and ninth-graders in primary schools across Iceland. The competition's main goals are to spark an interest in math among youth, encourage students who think math is too hard by showing them what they can achieve with effort, and inspire the most talented students to keep pushing themselves.
